Localization Projects
You can use Biblioso to coordinate the translation of content and the adaptation of the resulting material to specific target audiences and countries. In this sense, localization projects can be compared to documentation projects. For example, workflow planning and progress tracking are important tasks in both documentation and localization projects and so are maintaining style conventions and terminology usage. The difference is mainly that the material already exists in one language and that translation memory and glossary databases are used in addition to documentation knowledge bases.

  • Document translation   During document translation, the original documentation is translated and then managed as any book-like material. The translated manuscript is reviewed for language and technical accuracy, the design and artwork might be changed for the local market, and then the material is passed through the desktop publishing processes to create a finished product.
  • Software localization   Software localization can be more challenging than documentation localization because of the higher degree of adaptation to local markets and the added requirement for functionality testing after translation. For example, when translating user interface elements, the localizer must ensure that the localized interface (such as button labels or error messages) is displayed correctly and completely and that the user is able to enter information with all special characters that may be relevant to the local language. While the complexity and exact number and arrangement of steps might vary from one localization project to the next and from customer to customer, the following basic processes apply in general:
  1. The original documentation and artwork are translated, either at once or in stages.
  2. The translated text is edited to improve language and technical accuracy.
  3. For software or web applications, functionality and usability testing is performed.
  4. For book-like materials, the index is translated or recreated.
  5. Desktop publishing is performed to bring the material into its final format.
  6. Proofs are checked to ensure quality.
  7. The work is printed or prepared for online distribution.
